The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), formerly known as the Millennium Dam, is a gravity dam on the Blue Nile River in Ethiopia. It is located in the Benishangul-Gumuz Region, approximately 14 km east of the border with Sudan. The dam’s construction began on April 2, 2011, and it was officially opened on July 21, 2020. The GERD is a significant infrastructure project for Ethiopia, aiming to address the country’s energy shortage and export electricity to neighboring countries. With a planned installed capacity of 5.15 gigawatts, the GERD is set to be the largest hydroelectric power plant in Africa and one of the largest in the world. The dam is 145 meters high and 1,780 meters long, creating the Millennium Reservoir with a total capacity of 74 billion cubic meters. The dam features 11 x 400 MW and 2 x 375 MW Francis turbines, contributing to its substantial power generation capabilities. The GERD has been a subject of regional controversy due to its potential impacts on the water distribution and flow of the Nile River, affecting downstream countries like Egypt and Sudan. Despite challenges, the dam’s completion represents a milestone in Ethiopia’s development and energy production efforts
